My motor will not turn with the stearing wheel (helm), it moves only a bit but will not turn the motor... i am doing this out of water with engine off and on (with water running thru) this is outboard 90 hp yamaha it feels like there is something blocking the turning of the engine but i see nothing.. I have also sprayed WD40 on any moving parts to free them up if they are rusted, but i do not think that is the cause of the problem...

What would do this...any help would be great...

Re: Steering HELP!!!!

Disconnect your steering cable and see if your motor turns freely, It should. If not then your problem is there. Do you have a steering tube that the cable runs through to your outboard. They can corrode, get dirt in them quite easily. It may be a bad cable too.
Look to see if there is any grease gun nipple attachments on the outboard, any place there may be a pivot, lube it up and then try again.

Good Luck

Re: Steering HELP!!!!

But does the motor move freely with the cable disconnected? like Kev asked. Disconnect the cable and try to turn the motor with your hands (and probably some arms, too!).

I am not a mechanic, I am a boatsman and a hack, so whenever stuff doesn't move that should...WD40, and stuff that does move that shouldn't...JB Weld!! :D

Re: Steering HELP!!!!

Alex, be sure that the cable is completely disconnected from the steering linkage. If the helm moves the cable in and out, then the cable is free and operating. If the engine is not moving with the cable completly disconnected, then you need to Isolate either what is bblocking it or if the pivot pinion is corroded. (not sure if that is the appropriate name, but the part that the engine swings on) Like kresmond said, Grease everything that can be greased, and try to get WD-40 into those places that are corroded. These guys helped me out this spring when my cable was frozen - they offer a tremendous amount of knowledge and experience.

Re: Steering HELP!!!!

Try some PB Blaster ---it seems to work a little better than wd 40 on problems like these..Farmers use it on old rusty machinery fairly often.

Re: Steering HELP!!!!

On the other of that tube that you loosened up that big nut on you will see the end of your steering ram. On the end of that ram you will see a L shaped tie bar that connects to a point on the front of your engine. Remove the 9/16 nut from the bottom of that tie bar where it connects to the steering ram.Now do'es your engine turn freely by hand?
