Hey guys. I have had a project boat, 24' wellcraft offshore, for about a year. Its came a long way, but Im on the steering now. The rotary helm is a "BIG T" I think, it looks just like the big t, all others look different. Teleflex has 1 that I have found for about 200.00. The only thing is, the bushings are the only thing bad. Is there somewhere that sales parts for them maybe?? I hate to spend $200.00 for something that should be easy to fix. Any ideas??

Re: Steering Helm

Hi Stalker,
I believe those are sealed helms that are non-serviceable.I had a Big T helm in my 22'Aquasport fisherman.I swapped it out for a Teleflex No-feedback system. It works great with a 225 Johnson and no torque pull when wheel is still.Ya know,I may still have that Big T helm layin around.

Reel Appeal is correct, they are non-servicable. I also went to the Teleflex "No Feedback" this past spring and have been very pleased with it.

most of teleflex's steering helms are unserviceable.. I emailed them and asked..

they told me there were none... the units were drop in. and replace when old...

good luck with your project..

rgds

Franki

Re: Steering Helm

Thanks guys, I think mine is the BIG T, but not sure. There are no numbers on the helm. It looks identicle to the big t though. I have twin mercruisers with hydraulic steering. Would the NO FEEDBACK do the trick?? If so, was the mount system the same on them??

P.S Reel Appeal, if you still have the helm, Id be willing to buy it from you if it is in good condition..

Re: Steering Helm

Sabine,
If you have twin mercruisers with hydraulic steering, you DO NOT have the Big T helm. The Big T (and NO-Feedback)are cable fed(mechanical) helms as apposed to your hydraulic(helm) system. The Big T can be used on twin engines up to 34'and 235 total horsepower.I believe I replaced mine because it was worn(steering slack/worn gears)in the helm.I don't think mine would be much improvement for your project. If you still want it,you can have it free, just pay me for shipping.I would not feel right about it otherwise.Just remember its used and a mechanical helm(not hydraulic).
The Teleflex hydraulic system is called the SeaStar 1.It is available in Power-assist or non power assist. You must also match the helm unit to your application.Such as,do you have a Mercruiser1,Alpha1,Bravo1,2or3 sterndrive?Good luck.... :)

Re: Steering Helm

Mine is cable fed , cable from the helm, but the cable ends up in a steering sector mounted on the transom. The steering sector is fed by a regular general motors power steering pump on the motor. I guess thats different than hydraulic steering. Sorry, but still new to the boat building terminology. I guess I mean to say I have power steering.
