Can any one tell me the procedure for changing my steering cable, I have a 246 aquasport express fisherman. is it something I could do myself? I was out on saterday and my steering became increasingly harder to steer. I started hearing clicking, . noises from the Helm and it was slipping. Finally my steering would not turn at all ,and I had to be towed. I think i can remove the cable from the motor without taking the motor off. Would I have to replace the helm as well? Thanks for any help, I forgot to mention that is a double helm system, where only one cable is attached to the motor, and the other one is just hanging there not attached to anythingbut the helm. The motor that is on there now(225 1986 johnson) was a replacement motor where only one cable was needed.

Re: steering cable replacement

All V-6s need dual cables, ESPECIALLY those over 200Hp. Somebody goofed! If the pinion gear on the helm survived, you might be able to get a repacement. But you really need two on a motor that big. If all the hardware is there to attach a second, DO! Otherwise buy a complete dual cable steering system. You'll also need a dual steering attaching kit from a Johnson dealer for the motor. It's not a hard job if you have adequate access. Some boats are easy, others are all but impossible. Cick on the Marine Store tab in the upper left of this page and enter Steering in the search box to see what's available. I suggest a NFB system if you need a complete replacement.
