I need a new steering cable and cannot use the original because it was replaced at some point in the boats life and is waaaaaay too long. I'd like to do it right. I've found the websites that show how to measure - no problem there. The problem is in the attachment to the transom. I can't find any boat steering sites showing this type of ball/socket attachment system. Please take a look at these pics and let me know what you know about it. Can I just use a 'newer' system? keep in mind that I have a grapefruit size hole in my transom where this cable went through...

is that long shaft removable somehow? I can't see any set screws that hold it in..

the brass ball is sandwiched by the 2 plates and both plates are on the outside of the transom. I guess the plates are sealed with 3m and there is a grease nipple on the plates so I guess that keeps the water from getting in through there. There is a grapefruit sized hole behind the plates.

the next 2 pics show the brass ball sandwiched between the plates and ready to mount on the transom. this is the part that I don't see in any of the steering 'kits'.
