I have a '74 Starcraft Chieftain w/ 115 Johnson O/B. Pretty sure the steering cable and rotary steering are original.. I am putting in a new Teleflex NFB SS-132 steering box. How do I remove the old cable from the old steering box? There is no pin-hole like the newer ones have. The only marking on the old one is "L-3" I have tried turning the cable all the way out and removing the shaft, but something still holds it in. I'm sure someone out there knows. iboats has been a lifesaver for me and this project!!!

Thanks,

Tom

If you have a complete new helm and cable setup, I think bolt cutters may be what you want.

Of course, that reduces the ability to reuse the old cable.

If I didn't need the cable, that would have already happened...

You won't be able to put that old cable into a new helm unit. They are not interchangable.

Re: Steering cable removal??

I recently replaced my helm and steering cable with the exact same teleflex system. You must purchase a new cable with the new helm (they sell it that way for a reason!). I didn't realize how worn out the old cable was until the new one came. even if they are the same size, running that old worn out cable through the new helm will just wear the new helm out sooner, and you will never have "tight" steering. Cut the old one off and pull the new one through when you pull the old one out. I had to saw my steering wheel off the post and soak it in WD-40 before hitting it with a hammer to get it off. Probably a one hour job if everything goes well.

Re: Steering cable removal??

Hmmm...I obviously see the point in using a new cable. Mine did not come as a package. I bought an adapter to convert helm from quick-connect to threaded connection to use new helm with older-style cable.... This boat was rarely used and the old cable seems fine. I upgraded to NFB for exactly that reason...no feed-back.

Does anyone know how to remove the old cable?

Thanks,

Tom
