Any suggestions on a steering cable removal and replacement? It is on a 1964 Glastron V-171 with a rack. The cable was seized and the steering wheel would not turn. It turns (kind of) freely now, but the cable is broken! I have removed the cable from the motor, 1975 70hp Johnson, slide tube, but have not done so from under the dash. Anything in particular I should be aware of? Do I just unscrew the cable as though it was an oversized tach cable? Will it pull out from the dash or do I need to turn the wheel? If I can get a replacement, any suggestions on getting it back together? Thanks, Jim

buying a whole new steering system is not much more than buying just the cable....

I just replced mine on a 70s era boat, it was a teleflex system and the part number was visable on the cable. Brought it in and they couldnt match it up cause it was a smaller diameter cable than the newer ones. regardless they wanted 130 for just a cable, 160 for a full helm and cable kit. the tapered shaft for the steering wheel was the same as the older helm. (canadian moneis im talking about) I think online I saw cables for about 90us and the whole kits for 120.

new cables/helm kits use a quick connect to join instead of the screw on connections (talking about at the helm not for the transom mount)

removing it, once its unscrewed from the helm you can just turn the steering wheel and it will feed the cable out. Pull on it at the same time so it doesnt jam against side of boat or tangle up with dash wiring depending on your set up.

Okay 100k question...How the heck do you get the rod out of the rack??? I unscrewed the nut, but the cable hits tight to the hull as I turn the wheel and only about half the rod is out then...other than cutting a 6"x12" hole in the side of the hull, how does one get this out??? I have considered cutting the rod and just turn the wheel to get the rest out, but that's going to be an option when trying to put the new one in... Do I need to pull the rack????? If so how do you do that?

Some how the fun is waning!!!

im sure if you go on the teleflex website it will have step by step. I have only done the rotary not the rack style but i would imagine you could pull the steering wheel and drop the helm out the dash. 1 nut for the steering wheel 3 bolts for the helm. "think ouside the hull....."

gee, guess me providing the direct link to the instructions wasnt good enough, if you took the time to click it you would of been able to read that they say exactly what I suggested. Installation and removal is done with the helm removed from the dash.

Dube, I most certainly looked at the link you offered. To be honest, it was extremely rudimentary and said nothing about disconnecting a steering cable from a rack. It does tell how to install a rack to a helm, as if one was starting with none. It even provides a layout template for where on the helm the steering wheel would go. Unfortunately, that doesn?t help me get the steering cable disconnected from the rack so I can measure the cable. Without the measurement, I am unsure as to whether or not I can get a replacement cable. I appreciate the efforts of those who have given me suggestions and material (e.g.wiring diagrams) to get this boat back in the water. I?ll look elsewhere for assistance with this steering cable issue? Thanks, Jim

Re: Steering Cable Removal and Replace

Redknot, can't tell from your posts what rack steering you have. On the Merc Ride Guide, I pulled the long bolt that holds the pinion shaft and steering wheel. There is a large flat washer behind the rack that this bolt secures and it keeps the shaft from pulling out of the rack.Slip out the pinion shaft. and you can remove the pinion (and the rack). But your deal may be different and I'm relying on memory from around 20 years ago.
