STEERING CABLE QUESTION

I have a 25hp Yamaha outboard and I needed to replace the steering cable. I got it off easily but cannot get the cable out of the "tube". I treaked the tube so it is no longer useable so I am going to buy a new tube as well. My question is, are they universal? I went to Far west Marine and the guy had one and said it was for a Johnson and that he didn't carry them for Yamaha. As far as I can tell they are all the same. Am I wrong? And can I take mine and purchase a stainless steel piece of pipe with the same threads and use it? He quoted me $40 for the Johnson piece and that seemed expensive for that sleeve. Any ideas?

Re: STEERING CABLE QUESTION

Don't know about the tube application to your bracket but the threaded ends should be standard, notwithstanding the lenghth or i.d. fit. Teleflex is most widely used cables.
iboats sells various lengths right here.

cables

Here's another link to a place that carries a wealth of used and new parts for yamaha outboards. They have a toll free number or you can e-mail them.

transom parts

Re: STEERING CABLE QUESTION

Chances are you don't or did'nt need a new cable at all . You may well now. What happens is corrosion sets in on the inside of that tilt tube and constricts the steering cable to the point that it wo'nt function. If you can keep a cool head and beat that cable out of the tube without mushrooming out the end of the cable AT ALL then there is a good chance the cable can be saved. Those tube are not universal except that they will accept the standardized steering systems .Lenghths and outside diameters can very.I'dd go product specific and bite the bullet. Why can't you hone this tube out?

Re: STEERING CABLE QUESTION

If you do have to "help" the cable out of the tube, put a bolt in the hole in the end of the steering ram. This is the hole the steering link goes into. Make the bolt the same size as the hole. The end won't be so apt to mushroom as you "help" it. May have to file a little but not much.

OBJim
