Let me start off by saying you guys have allways been a wealth of Knoweldge, so thank you.

Here's my issue

Bought a 2001 Suntracker pontoon with a DOA 2002 40 hp merc 2 stroke that i am parting out. I removed the motor and replaced it with a 87 75 HP mariner. The steering cable from the donor boat and the one on the pontoon were identical and both in great shape so i just used the one that was on the pontoon when i purchased it. The steering worked perfectly before removing the 40 hp. Now, since installation, the steering cable seems to slide out of the nut that attaches to the tilt tube so you could see the stainless steel rod that articulates the motor. Ive read somewhere that there are little "half Moons" that go inside that nut that attaches the outside sleeve of the cable and keeps the assy together. The motor does turn, but as one would expect in this situation, its sloppy and unsafe.

so that said. Am i correct about these half moons, and would purchasing a telefex replacement nut kit with the half moons correct the situation? any ideas? i REALLY dont want to have to replace this cable as it may require to remove the motor again, which means i need to get a cherry picker, again.. Thoughts? Thanks!

One of 3 things is wrong...........

1. The nut is stripped at the threads - get a new cable
2. the threads on the tilt tube are bad - get a new tilt tube
3. the small flange is shot where the nut holds the cable onto the tilt tube. - get a new cable
