Just picked up an older 24' pontoon with a 40 horse Tohatsu engine.. the sterring seemed to be frozen so i soak it and a day later started working the sterring wheel back and to and I thought it has loosened up as the steering wheel got easier to turn. cable did NOT loosen up. Did i tear something up at the steering wheel or what? Where do I find a new cable and what all do i need to do. This is my first boat. Thanks so much for any help!

Re: Steering cable issue

the best way is to get a complete helm steering kit. And right here at iboats. Their several types most use a rotary steering kit. It sounds like the gear in the helm unit is stripped it doesn't take a lot.

Thank you very much. Do I have to get a cable specific for the Tohatsu and whats the best way to remove the old cable from the engine?

You will have to take a very close look at the motor end, but the one I have experience with have a tube that goes through the motor base and has a 3/8 hole in the end of the push rod and that is where the motor rod hooks in.

I had a NS40 C Nissan on mine.
