Steep ramp...help

I used a different ramp this weekend and it was steeper -- so when loading the boat the Bow was below the Bow stop and I couldn't use the winch.

I backed trailer in farther but then the boat would not touch the the bunks.
So I had to pull trailer out some and Powerload which I dislike and know most posters here hate

Anyway -- when I finally got it on the trailer and pulled out of the water she was a good 6 inches back from normal. At 19 feet and probably 3000 lbs there is no way to Winch her in closer once dry.

IS there any danger to towing boat that is back off the bow stop a bit? and if so how do I move it forward besides putting it back in at a regular ramp?

Besides never using this ramp again -- is there anything I could have done to avoid this?

Was you by yourself?
If not, you could have had the other person work the winch some while you applied power to help out.
The farther you back in, the lower the winch tower will be, ie: bow will be higher on boat.

You need a different winch.

I got it loaded on right by power loading it but when pulling it out of the water I guess it slipped back on the trailer some.

Anyway to move it forward while it is in my garage? or just drive slow on my way next weekend??

Hard on boat trying to dry winch. You will have to get it back in the water to get it where it should be. I for one would not try to move it out of the water.
You can block it up and move the trailer back, but would be easier to just get it back in the water.

Re: Steep ramp...help

When you power load it at a steep ramp, put the bow strap on and pull it up tight before you pull it up the ramp.

You should be able to pull it forward with the winch while it's on the trailer. If you can't, you could mark the location of the keel rollers, loosten up the mounting and raise them with a small floor or bottle jack under each till they take some, but not all of the hull weight, then pull it forward with the winch. Then reset the rollers where they were.

As a design matter, the bow eye, loading winch, and winch tower should all be beefy enough to dry slide the boat on the bunks in a pinch.

hope it helps

if you had pulled up just a little it would have gone in place to winch up. so it takes another minute on the ramp.

Re: Steep ramp...help

I launch at a steep ramp all the time. When returning the boat to the trailer I back trailer into water just till the nose of the boat is even with the front roller. The back of the boat is still off the bunks. After conecting the front strap I then pull the truck up just till the boat starts to settle on the bunks at this point my boat will winch up tight without much effort. It takes a few min. to do if you?re by yourself but a cakewalk if you have help.

I also have a friend who has a big boat and he installed nylon strips (sold at Bass Pro Shop) to his bunk rails. His boat can be half way on his trailer when he pulls out and then easily winched up tight. Those nylon strips are slick when wet.

Wax your bunks and get a 2 speed winch. For years, I had to move those last 6" in the parking lot.
