Howdy:

I purchased an old Penn reel that was strung with steel wire!. The rod for this reel is also very old and is made of steel, is square near the handle, about 6' long, and has a cork handle. The guy who sold it to me said he last used it just last weekend. I have never heard of anyone fishing with such a combo. The guy said he used it to catch trout. Lake trout? Otherwise, it seems too heavy for any other types of trout. Does anyone know about this type of fishing? Has anyone tried it?

Re: steel fishing line?

Steel line is usually used for big game fish or fish whith lots of razor sharp teeth.

I have also heard that it is great when fishing in fast waters (rivers). when set up proper with smaller lures, it keeps the lure under the water instead of surfing on the top. But I have never tried it so i am not possitive.
