My engine isn't charging. Rectifier has 3 wires, 2 yellow one red, and only indicates current flow one way on both, so assume the rectifier is OK. The stator has 4 wires coming out of it (not 3), two yellow and 2 red. When I disconnect all these wires from everything, and do a continuity check to ground, the two yellow wires show short to ground. So this means the stator is dead on this unit?

Welcome Timeking..!

First....the model number is not a model number. It looks more like a serial number. The Model number would be more like J175(XXX)CR(X). The "X's" being other letters.

I looked in my drawings and couldn't find anything to match your color code. If you could post the model number we can make sure of the right year....course there's always a chance that the current stator on your engine might be a replacement from another source other than OMC/BRP.

the two yellow wires come down to a terminal strip, where the rectifier is connected. The other two wires come to a plug, which goes over to what I assume is a powerpack.

I can't find any other number on it, but I know for certain it is a 1984 175.

Do you have any drawings that show 4 wires?
