Is it safe to use my multimeter to check to see If I'm gettin voltage to my rectifier by touching the the two terminals that the stator connects to the rectifier? and if so do I set it for AC and how many volts should it produce?

1975 650 65hrs 3cyl merc

Might be easier to hook a multi-meter across the battery terminals, set the meter to a dc scale so you can measure 12-15 volts dc.If you start the motor and raise the rpm's up a little you will see the voltage on the meter go from 12v(give or take a little) to 14v dc give or take a little. That tells you the charging systems is working.

Using a standard Multimeter is not gonna work... And measuring at the battery isn't either, due to the AC charge releasde from the battery itself.. What you want to measure (obviously) is AC voltage from the stator leads... You really need a Volt Meter with Peak Reading Capabilities on AC.

You can buy an adaptor (that may go with your multimeter) that will allow you to run this test.

You can go ahead and try it without the adaptor, as I don't think the voltage going to the rectifier will be enough to fry it. But it may jump all over the place so much that you'll never get a constant reading....

Re: Stator Voltage Test?

I'm just trying to see if I'm getting anything from the stator. If I get a reading of some sorts using the multimeter like maybe 20v or so, that's all I'm looking for. So I'll undo the lead from stator to rectifier then see If I get anything.

you can check across the battery just fine. as long as the voltage increases with the throttle its working most likely.

you can put your meter on both leads coming from the stator and turn the engine slowly ( not running) use the starter or your hand with the plugs out.

and it will show some small AC voltage also.

both of these checks will give you 99% accurate reading its working or not, all with a $10 meter.
