Re: Stator unit symptoms

I'm not sure about your motor specificly, however I just had to have one replaced on a Merc. Sport-Jet 175 ($290.00) and it was: having truble starting, rough idle, stalling at idle, & missfiring. It seamed to run great at high RPM (55MPH).

Re: Stator unit symptoms

Thanks for the info. I decided to stop being lazy and did a little searching around the site. I am now convinced that the stator is my problem. (Runs good low end but falls on its face durring WOT)

Thanks to some previous postings I determined what wires I need to test, and roughly what the output should be.

Sorry for the dumb questions guys, but this is a new hobby for this poor(broke not pittiful) man.

Now off to test a stator!!!

JAVLIN!!! STOP THAT!!! History is critical to a heuristics specialist (troubleshooter). You have now broken the history of your problem into three, disconnected pieces. It is very confusing to anyone trying to help, as you can see from the above replies.

The parts changing jerk who got you to buy a timer base as an experiment to see if that fixes your trouble has gotten you into a parts changing mode. If you can afford it, I suppose it is a way to really learn your engine, but it is an expensive way to get it working again. True, it is cheaper than $75/hr to get HIM to experiment at YOUR expense.

Don't misunderstand, the Stator may be your trouble, but prove it before you buy more parts.

Get a can of WD-40 and, when she is bogging, shoot it into the carbs. If it does no good, proceed with the ignition trail. If it helps, forget ignition and wring out the fuel system, starting at the tank.

In the electronics/computer field, we had a rule that whatever had been touched most recently was most likely to cause the next problem. We make tiny errors, we install faulty parts and we install parts that fail quickly. Could that have happened in your carbs??

Red sky at night. . .
JB

Re: Stator unit symptoms

JB, what I meant by "Off to test the stator" was now I need to get out the old FLUKE and start probing the stator wires to see what kind of voltages I have. I DON'T want to be a part changer. I can't afford to be.

My trouble shooting skills are sharp as long as I know rouoghly what the different components should be doing. The search feature in the forum is very helpful. I think I found out what I need to know to test the stator properly.

The Fluke is great , but you get phoney output readings without adapter.

Re: Stator unit symptoms

On the Brown/yellow I'm getting 51 volts while the motor is cranking with no plugs in it. The OMC dealer I talked to said that I have no less than 90 volts, but I'm not sure if that is while the motor is running.

Re: Stator unit symptoms

You should hwve 2 wires comming from stator to termials on power pack , termial #4 and 5. color of wire is 1 brown wire and 1 brown with orange tracer( orange may look yellow from age) but wires come from same spot on stator. Disconnect the 2 wires from powerpack and connect red meter lead on 1 wire and black meter lead on the other wire, at cranking rpms with spark plugs in using peaking reading meter you should have app 150 volts. Next red lead to brown wire, black lead to ground, other wire not touching anything, meter should read 0. If you get reading here wire or stator is shorted to ground. The charge coil is not grounded.

Re: Stator unit symptoms

I have baby sitting duty tonight, but I'll try that tomorrow afternoon. Thanks for the tip.

By the way, I did get a manual off ebay and it should be here soon. I won't be bothering JB much longer.

Thanks clanton

You don't bother me, Javlin, I'm just naturally crotchety and seem aggravated when I am merely excited. You are in good hands but if I see an opportunity to help, I'll jump in.

Good luck.

Red sky at night. . .
JB

Re: Stator unit symptoms

OK...
I'm still waiting on my manual that I bought on EBay, but I did get a new stator. I believe that the old one was bad because I did get voltage to ground. The voltage WAS good between the BRN and BRN/YL, 125 V.

Now I have a new problem.

After reassembly of the motor and carbs(yes I went through them again) I had only set the flywheel on the shaft and started the nut when an associate(I won't go so far as to call him a friend) decided to see if it would fire while I was in the house. Well...he sheared the key.
I don't know the exact size, and there was very little left of it to tell. Just shavings. Does anyone know? I don't think that I need an OMC key, but I'll do whatever you all suggest.

Thanks

Javlin85
Keep your keys in your pocket!!
