i have a 1972 50 hp johnson, 2 cyl.

engine runs fine but i don't think the battery is being charged as i have to charge it after each use.

1. replaced rectifier-tested bad per manual

stator readings
1. yellow wire to gnd reads 16-31 ohms.
2. yellow/grey to gnd reads infinite.
3. yellow to yellow/grey reads 2 ohms
3. brown to gnd reads 532 ohms
4. tach doesn't work, grey signal wire reads 12 vdc

my manual has additional yellow wires to test, but said that yellow to gnd should be infinite.

Is my stator definitely bad. i dont want to pony out the money for a stator 165 bucks if thats not it.

any other tests i should do?

thanks

Re: stator testing,

test leads both directions ie red wire on yellow black to ground, then black to yellow wire red to ground...repeat for all rectifier wires. should have continuity one direction only.
i use an analog meter as digital give confusing readings.

If those are true numbers, the stator yellow is shorted to ground. But I have trouble believing the numbers. Yellow to yellow grey sounds ok. But why isn't yellow/grey to ground also shorted to ground? Something is funny here.

You seem to indicate you have the manual. Go by the numbers as listed there. In short, there should be a low resistance between yellow and yellow/grey and infinity between either of them and ground. Brown is for the igniton system and has nothing to do with the alternator.

Re: stator testing,

rectifier is good was just replaced, stator is whats in question. i just ordered a stator tonite, so will see if it fixes the problem, will know if my tach works and my battery gets charged. It's an old motor so will see, its only money? HA ha

Re: stator testing,

Thanks for your reply, i ordered a stator tonite. its an old motor but compression is excellent 150 psi and 145 psi. starts on the first crank. just don't like that my battery doesnt charge and i can't use my tach. i want to know when my motor rpm's is topped out.

thanks

Re: stator testing,

think about the stator numbers,it's completely possible, if on yellow has high resistance and is connected to other yellow with low resistance-gnd, then if they are connected you should read path of least resistance and still get low ohm reading of 2 ohms.
if one yellow is grounded you will also read low ohms, basically yellow wires are gnded preventing charge from reaching my battery.

if this makes sense, the coil never charges.
