stator/switchbox compatibility..

Good morning all......I stopped by my dealer yesterday to pick up a stator for '88 Classic 50..45 hp Merc. The partsman cautioned me about replacing only the stator because should the box be bad, it could fry the new stator. My manual gives no reference to this phenomonon. He did however put enough doubt in my head to make an appointment with the service dept. to take the boat in for diagnostics to be certain of the problem. Has anyone heard of this stator/switchbox concept, or is he selling me a bill of goods? After all, business is business. Thanks for any suggestions.

jg

Re: stator/switchbox compatibility..

what is the procedure to test the switchbox with a meter?? I had no clue that the reason i had no spark on my motor was becausae both switchboxes were bad. After buying a new stator, rect., ignition switch, and battery, the only thing left to replace was the switchboxes. Obviously this was a costly was to pinpoint the problem with my little knowledge. My manual makes no reference to testing the switchboxes.

Thanks-
Bobby

Thanks for the replies. I have her buttoned back up and hitched for the ride to the dealer for an "official" diagnostic. Better to invest the 150 or so as to start hit and miss tactics. I'll let them give me the stats. I can turn the wrenches.

Keep your props wet......jg

you can test the switch box@stator just by swapping wires in color code order ;if you like e mail me will send you a trouble shooting guide lonewolf5347@cs.com

Re: stator/switchbox compatibility..

Jg, I have NEVER saw a stator kill a box, or vice versa....a stator makes power with simple copper windings an flywheel magnets...a box manages/ stores that power and sends it to the coils....a weak stator will cause low input voltage to the box, and weak/intermitent spark out of it..if you unhook a coil so that power has no where to go, then you can wreck a box, the stator can be unhooked all day and it wont get hurt, no complete path, no current flow an no heat....

I'll have to agree with odd1. The stator just produces spark with magnets and copper wires. Be weary of parts men. Usually they are just good for selling parts, and sometimes pull a story outta their @xx that they heard from thier brother. Talk to a well recommended service man, and then get a second opinion for probs such as these. Good Luck

Re: stator/switchbox compatibility..

Greetings...Thank you all again for the useful advice. I did take the ship in Sat. morning for an official diagnos. Probably made a big mistake. 95 per hr. and will likely tell me what I already suspect and up to a week and a half backlog on service. I would think that the repair manual would mention any such likelyhood of one part being survival dependent on another. The Seloc manual seems to be very good in it's attention to detail. So, here I sit, waiting for a call from the "pro's". And, I think I just heard a big'un break water......I'm finding me a stator......jg

You need to check output voltage of stator to pack and output from switchbox voltage to coil. Ohm the coils. When the voltage on stator is too high, cooks the power packs/switchboxes.
