Little lever on mine was the warm up lever. Motor wont go into gear unless its right down. Sometimes it wouldnt start until right down too.
You might be able to remove the wires without removing the flywheel if you can get your fingers in close.
I dont know that model but on most older mercs you need the special flywheel tool to remove it as otherwise you can just end up breaking ht bolts in the flywheel holes and bending your puller.
on some you can unbolt the flywheel to expose the hub underneath and the stator etc but yes do mark everything very carefully if you do that although you can put them back somewhat ok with using the timing marks on it.

hey buckeye welcome to the site...yes you can remove just the flywheel by taking the bolts off after its marked just be sure to be careful with it and not bang it around..after that you can remove the stator by 4 allen head bolts..just also letting you know you can rewire new wires in it and if anyone says otherwise i have proof that you can cause its what i did to mine since i was in the same boat as you. when putting everything back together please make sure that you torque it down to specs via the manual i learned the hard way by not doin it were the block meets the lower unit, and now doing a complete rebuild.

thanks vision91 for the welcome :) thought about rewiring it was going to wait and see how bad or burnt it looked before I shelled out a couple hundred for a new/good used one. should ohm test it too but haven't seen in the manual what range it should fall in the guy I got the boat from gave me a downloaded manual for it (kind of scary huh) but I like a chance to learn something new also hope your rebuilds about done its the beginning of fishin season here

Hey BR, the Merc's changed ign systems about the time your motor was made. Do you have distributor ignition and one coil or six coils? Vision is talking about a distributor ignition stator.
