Stator Question

The motor won't run past 1800 rpm,I have done the trouble shooting and it isn't a fuel/carb issue.
I was told the"high speed side of the stator" was bad.
1st of all, does a stator have a high speed side, I thought they work or they don't and is there a way to test it to see if that is the problem?
They also said to look at the "switch box", any clues as to what this could be?
never heard anything called by that name before.
Thanks

Re: Stator Question

OMC stator's do not have a low, and high side. The switch box is the power pak that take's input from the charge coil, and ignition sensors, and has output to the coils'. You need a service manual to trouble shoot this system.

Re: Stator Question

Those are Mercury terms and theirs do have high and low windings. I'm betting you were talking to Merc guys. Their switchbox is what everybody else on Planet Earth calls a power pack or CD pack. Mercury likes to be "different". They're also the only ones on Planet Earth that call foot pounds "pound feet". Pretty wacky bunch up in these parts. ;)

Re: Stator Question

Does your motor have SLOW? If so,

1. Use a temperature probe and verify that the engine is not overheating.
2. Disconnect the tan temperature wire from the pack and retest. If the engine now performs properly, replace the temperature switch.
3. Make sure the tan temperature switch wire is not located next to a spark plug wire.
4. Check the stator resistance. If it reads approximately 900 ohms, replace it with the 500 ohm design.

Check the stator and trigger resistance and DVA output as given below:

Wire Color : Check to Wire Color : Resistance : DVA Reading
Brown wire : Brown/Yellow wire : 450-550 : 150V or more Connected
Black/White wire :White/Black wire : 15-42 : 0.6V or more Connected

Some engines use the following wiring on the trigger:

White wire : Blue wire : 15-42 : 0.6V or more Connected
White wire : Green wire : 15-42 : 0.6V or more Connected

Re: Stator Question

I don't kow if it has SLOW, I know what that is but whether my engine has it or not I don't know.
1981 Evinrude 50.
The wire from the temp sensor seems to go into the harness that goes to the binacle, probly for the overheat alarm.
Thanks for the tech stuff though, I will get on that this weekend.
I am going fishing sat, I know it runs now, alibeit, poorly but it runs and I AM going fishing so I don't want to make it not run before then.
It pees like a sailor and the paint on the head isn't discolored at all so I think the temp is fine, but yes that sensor may have flipped out.
Fixxed a buddies motor once, he got it so hot the temp sensor actually melted, how he didn't seize the thing up is beyond me.
that has been 2 years ago and it still runs like a top, pretty lucky if you ask me.
I work for a very large Pontoon manufacturer and there are engines all over at work, maybe I could paint "Yamaha" on my hood and hope noone noticed.

We mounted a 350 Yamaha OUTBOARD on a 25 footer the other day, the thing is HUGE!
806 pounds without fluids or a prop and the tech said they burn 32 GHP at WOT.
They had the hood on the floor and it came almost up to my hip, the whole motor has to be over 6 feet tall, very impressive to see.
Anywho, thanks for the help.
