Stator problem

I own a 88 year model 60hp mercury and for that year and hp the book shows a stator with blue/blue white, red/red white plus the yellows and one black. My engines stator has blue and red wires only plus the yellows and the black. When I bought the boat I took it to a shop and they installed this stator on along with a power pack switch that matched the one they took off, and the engine ran good, its been setting up for three or four years now and it will not spark, I suspect it’s the stator, but I’m a little confused about the wiring. Anybody got any thoughts? Does stators just go bad for settin up for a while?

So you have 2 blues , 2 reds ,yellows and a black correct.. if so test the stator between 2 blues and then the 2 reds also test each to ground / black. But before you do any of that disconnect the black/yellow from the switch box and see if you have fire the black/yellow is the kill fire wire on the switch box

I did not know that a new battery had been installed and motor cranks over fast.----Missed that in post #1 I think.----And if flywheel does not spin fast there will be no spark.----I need to stop trying to help on some of these posts that leave out critical info !!!!

Looks like you have a 91 and up stator or an after market the Sierra stator for your engine has a red and blue that goes to the switch box and 2 yellows that go to the rectifier also the 91 and above stator has red blue and 2 yellows

If you want to repair it yourself , test the DVA voltage from stator as it could be a bad switchbox

The yellows should be for your alternator and the red and blue for your fire so test voltage with a DVA meter on red and blue disconnected from switch box if voltage is good test connected to switch box, if that shows good then test coming out of switch box. I would bet it's your switch box also before you do any of that unhook the black/ yellow from the switch box to eliminate the kill circuit
