Stator check?

Hi,I am trying to check a stator on a 1980 inline 90 merc. I checked with a voltmeter while running, and the low speed checked good and the high speed was in in spec except polarity was reversed. Does anyone know if this is right or how to correct? Motor runs good until it gets on plane then begins surging. fuel,carbs are good Thanks,Timb

timb:i would check the stator with a ohm meter. hi @ low side to see if resistance is the same.not running disconected from switch-box
