Hi all,
I am looking for confirmation that my stator is blown before I spend the $300 for a new one - or whether is would be worth having it checked by a real mechanic.
Engine is a 1987 45 hp 4 cyl. serial No. OB258460
I'm getting no spark to the plugs. Went through the electrical system checks (Multi meter) in the shop manual.
Ignition switch, mercury switch and coils seem fine (didn't get to the trigger assembly yet).
Stator doesn't look so good. Blue-to-Blue&White is supposed to read 5700 to 8000 ohms. Starts off at about 27 meg ohms, then resistence starts decreasing; after about 2 min it got down to 0.3 meg ohms (300,000 ohms) then I stopped watching. It looks like watching a capacitor charging, except in reverse I guess.
Essentially the same thing happens with the blue to ground and red to ground, both of these are supposed to be isolated from ground.
Red-to-Red&White looks OK (147 ohms).
So, with these readings can I be confident that the stator is no good and go ahead and install a new one, or could other problems cause these syptoms / readings?
If so, what other parts should I replace? I have read in past threads that installing a new rectifier is a good idea, although battery charge has never been a problem with this boat.
Thanks in advance.
Tim
