stater rope will not retract it self

I have a Model 120 20HP Mercury outboard motor that the rope will not retract, so a friend told me to spray a WD40 on the rope mechanism so I did now not only I have the same problem plus unless I pull the rope 2-3times with short strokes the flywheel will not engage. Please help me...

Your recoil starter mechanism is broke, Marcelo. Replace it. If you are very brave it can be fixed. . . can you put toothpaste back in the tube?<br /><br />Worth the bux to replace.<br />JB
