I just bought a sail boat that has been in a pole building storage barn for 4 years. The Tohatsu 3.5 has not been started or in the water since then. The motor was never in saltwater. When the boat was put in storage the motor was supposedly winterized. Could someone please outline the steps I should take before trying to start this motor. Also I have no manuals so can someone give me the oil/gas mix for the 1997 tohatsu 3.5. Is 24:1, 32:1 or 40:1 or something else.

Thanks
jim

standard oil mix is 50:1, but if its been sitting for a while , it wouldnt hurt to run a first tank with double oil or so, say maybe 24:1 or 32:1....

before you do start it, pour some tcw-3 oil down the carb throat and also into the spark plug hole and rotate the engine around to spread it out a bit...
before starting, its good to check for compression(with your finger if need be)
check for spark by holing the plug against the block while cranking
check the the fuel pump works if equiped(possible internal tank)

use fresh gas and good oil and put it in a 5 gallon bucket and have at it

if all else fails, ill trade you my moter in law for it :)

m ikey

I have an 03 Tohatsu 3.5b. Manual says go 25:1 for first five hours of the season, the 50:1 after that.

And stick with the same kind of outboard oil during the season. Mine was a little sensitive to that last year.
