I have a 1988 125 hp force, just replaced a bad CDI box and lower carb. I can get it started with starting fluid and then it dies out. Disconnected the gas line to the carb and there is plenty of gas. Any ideas?

you don't want to use starting fluid unless it's an emergency, you will not have sufficient lubrication and can damage the engine this way. problem is probably carb related but it's worth checking compression first. Starting fluid is designed to require very little compression. If comp looks fine I would remove the carbs and tear down to clean and reset the mixtures and idle to factory. You must be getting spark or it wouldn't run at all.

Thanks, I will do a break down of the carbs and see what I come up with. Good info on the starting fluid

Are you pressing in the key and holding it in to choke the engine? Are the low speed needles set too lean on the carbs? Are you starting in fast idle position?
