my 1968 evinrude 55hp starts in gear, also won't shift into neutral. Could somebody tell me where the neutral safety switch is, as well a where the shifting coils are, plus what they look like. I have a service manual, but it seems to be worthless as a component locator..

Thanks

Re: starts in gear

Hi,
The shift coils are in the LU,They are attached to the green & blue wire that runs down to the LU from inside the hood. The motor is always in F gear until it is turned over, then the Hydrolic pump in the LU shifts it in to Neutral. You my have to heavy of LU oil in the gearcase. It needs a
75Wt.not 90wt to pass through the micro filter screen for the pump so the LU will shift in to neutral when the motor turns over. The second most common problem is that the filter screen is pluged up and won't allow the oil to pass through it. The third is the shift coils, rod addustment and or wireing. The coils look like a choke solonoid.
...have fun...corm
