Starts for few seconds, then won't start!!

Hi everyone.
I am a new subscriber to this forum after purchasing a 2002 Hurricane Fun Deck 232 in April 2010. I have been lurking around and reading everyone's posts and replies. At some point I hope to be a valuable contributer to the forum. I haven't yet have the time to take a picture to add to that thread, but I soon will. If I can get this boat to start reliably!!

Here is the scenario. Boat is trailered, back it into the water, battery on, lower the prop, blower fan on for a couple minutes. Turn over ignition key and motor starts right away, runs for 3-4 seconds and stops. Go to start it again and nothing!!! Doesn't crank at all. All guages work, two beeps when turning key from off to on, but nothing. Gear shift is in neutral, but nothing. Pull trailered boat out of the water. Now here is the tricky part. Sometimes out of water the boat will start right up. But then sometimes same thing as when in the water. I've been told by the former owner that the ignition switch has gone bad in the past. Two weekends ago I changed out the ignition switch after towing to the local parts store, and it ran great all weekend. This past weekend, nothing at all. Same situation, but this time a new ignition switch did not fix the issue. So after 6 hours diagnosing. now I tow it to the local marina for service and it starts right up.

Any ideas?!?!?!?! Grounding problem??

Rich, I got the same problem with a 98 ProV150 with a 704 binnacle. I am thinking it is the neutral switch in the binnacle. Would like to hear from others before I pull the binnacle apart. My Binnacle is original.
Anyone got any ideas

I would post on the Mercruiser/Volvo IO forum of iboats... Neutral safety sounds like a possibility.

Good luck!

Thanks, I'm already working on that one. I am searching on how to bypass the neutral switch, just to test if that is what is bad.
