Starting without starter rope?

Hi all,

I have a line on a 9.8 Merc for an excellent price, one slight issue is that the last guy who looked at it broke the starter cord by yarding on the thing with gorilla force.
The gentlemen selling the engine says it runs great and has all the accessories he is going to throw in. I want to hear this motor run .He doesn't want to pay to have a starter rope put in- let alone meet me half way on one.Even add it to the price....He seems to be on the level.

Is there an alternate way to start this up just so I can hear it run?
I think I read on here using a 1/2inch? drill motor (or impact gun) and a socket with a notch cut into it for the tang washer.
I don't want to pay for a pile of junk.

Don't know for sure but could the recoil be removed and a rope wound on flywheel to start it?

Re: Starting without starter rope?

Get a signed paper that says the purchase is contingent on the motor running in the presumed condition for "x" amount of time after the sale.
Buy it, put a rope in it, if it runs good then call him to say thanks. If not call him to say you are returning it for a full refund.
If he won't go for it walk away, it may have a problem then.
check your state laws, it may need to be notorized.

Push it down a hill and pop the clutch... hehe sorry. Don't use an impact that is not too good for the engine, and you might not be able to get a socket off the nut before the motor takes a drill right out of your hands. Try to remove the recoil and start the motor with a rope around the flywheel. Good luck.

If he's to cheap to meet you half way for a pull cord, tell him to shove the motor!!!

The last (only) time I ever bought a used car with a "bad" starter, it threw a rod as soon as I had spent the time and money to install a rebuilt starter.

If he broke the rope trying to start it, .......well use yer head, will ya.

hope it helps
