Starting Problems

Upon turning my ignition, I get a dead reponse. When I hook up my battery jump start charger I get a slow crank out of my starter motor (since I bought my boat I usually have to use a jump start on my first start). The pinion gear goes into the flywheel teeth, but does not drop off on the slow crank.

Does this sound like its the battery, or is it possibly the starter motor? Any other suggestions? Thanks

Re: Starting Problems

Is it possible to have a battery so undercharged that a jump start would not provide an ample charge.

Re: Starting Problems

Yes it is especially if you don’t put out enough amps when jumping its better to put a trickle charge on four at least 24 to 48 hours

Re: Starting Problems

Do a slow charge on the battery and check with a hydrometer. If OK I would check tha cables and connections to battery, starter & solonoid. A cable can look good and still be filled with the green corrosion crud.

Re: Starting Problems

you also might want to consider checking your jumper cables too. alot of times the cables themselves are to blame
