I stated my mercury 20hp 2 cycle & it ran fine, later that day it would crank but not start. I checked & there was no fire from either plug. What would cause both coils to not fire at the same time?

Could be a wire has insulation worn or cracked off and is grounding it (speaking from experience here). Older Merc wiring is notorious for that.

Re: Starting problems

Serial # of the motor should be posted.----They are not all the same.

Re: Starting problems

It could be several things, with no spark on both cylinders, that isolates it to a common source, the CDI box or the trigger or the stator.

Re: Starting problems

The wiring was much improved on these newer motors.----Find the wires going to the kill switch and unplug it ( black / yellow stripe I think ) and see if there is spark after you do that.
