My 90hp 1990 Johnson ran good. Took it out to replace water pump. All back together however, it will not start. It cranks appears to not be getting fuel. The boat is tilted about 10 deg. to starboard and 5 deg. down to the bow due to were I am working on it. Would that disrupt the carb float?

Re: Starting problem

I wouldn't think so.You could correct the 5 deg.with the trim anyway. What is your starting procedure?Does the fuel primer bulb pump up firm and hold before cranking?Has the engine set out of use for a spell?

Re: Starting problem

get a spraybottle and put some premix in and spray it into the carbtroughts.
that should fire up your motor if not check for spark.

good luck

Re: Starting problem

The bulb seems kind of loose. It does not get real hard. However, it was fine until I replaced the gear unit. But I never started it since I removed it from the water. If the bulb will not get hard, is it the primer bulb?? I will spray into the carb and see.

Re: Starting problem

ronmax, how full is the fuel tank.If low,and with the boat posed as it is,the pickup in the tank could be sucking air if the tank is low on fuel. This position may have also drained the carbs when you tilted up to drop the lower unit.

DHP

Re: Starting problem

After I replaced the gear case. It started for about 30 seconds then died. Next start got a few ignites and now nothing. That why I think that I used what was in the carbs now there is no gas in carb?. I have a half full tank of gas, however, the boat is tilted 10 deg. down to starboard. I can not get the primer bulb real hard but it appears to get semi hard.

Re: Starting problem

time to check the floats in the carbs.
may be the needles gut stuck.
is there old gasoline in the tank and carbs?
i dont think the position of the boat will prevent your motor from starting.
immagen you are in the ocean with 4 ft swells ??
that should not keep your motor from starting.

if you are shure you have good spark, and if you can start it in a spraybottle using premix(no starting fluid) i would slean the carbs and go from there.

reeldutch

Re: Starting problem

How can I make a remote starter switch so that I can be back at the motor to start it. What color wires to I need to short together?

Re: Starting problem

Remove the engine cover. Turn the key on (not start) and push the key in a few times. If you hear a clicking from the engine the primer solenoid is working. If you don't hear it, investigate further. You don't short any wires to start the engine at it. Use a 14 gauge wire and jumper between the large positive battery cable on the starter solenoid (this is the terminal with the large cable that runs back to the positive post on the battery). Touch the other end of the wire to the small "start" terminal on the solenoid. There are two small terminals. One is grounded to the block. Touch the wire to the other one. Remember, you still need to make sure the primer solenoid is working and is activated or you can crank all day and this engine will not start.

Also make sure you didn't knock loose the crankcase pulse hose to the fuel pump when you removed the lower unit shift linkage.

How long was the engine out of use before your starting problem? It matters.1 month,6 months, longer?Carburetors will foul over a period of time and need cleaning.

Re: Starting problem

thats what i'm thinking to.

but it could also be real bad compression or crankcase leak.

Re: Starting problem

The engine always ran well and it had only been about a week from the time I last started it until now. I did something when I removed the gear case. I did blow the main 20 amp fuse when I was checking out the vro2 wiring which had been disconnected. But initially the engine did run for about 30 seconds. Need to check spark and spray fuel into carb. Any other fuses or what not that I could have detached?
