Starting problem

This is gonna sound bad cause I don't know what things are called exactly. On my 1972 evinrude 25 hp when I pull on the rope to start motor I have noticed that the flywheel grabs what is below it. This also causes of course the tiller hander to go to stop because when the flyweel grabs what it's sitting on it moves the lever on the carb and shuts the fuel off which would kill the engine. So I think I am pulling 7-8 times or more to start motor instead of 2-3 times. It doesn't do it eveytime which is why I get it started. Is there a adjustment I need to do or lube something so the flywheel doens't grab.

Thanks for all the help. It would be nice not to have to pull motor so many times especially when it's cold and dark in the morning which is when I primarily use it for duck hunting.

Re: Starting problem

the fly wheel is catching something on the timing plate, surprized you can even start it. has any one mess with the coils, may be miss aligned, and hitting flywheel.

Re: Starting problem

Two very common causes:
1: Somebody has replaced the coils and didn't align them. They are rubbing on the flywheel magnets. The ends of the laminated cores should be flush even with the machined edges of the posts upon which they sit.

2: Somebody has had the armature plate off and installed the aluminum retainer plate upside down. It goes with the flat side up. If it is upside down there will be excessive looseness of the armature plate, allowing it to flop up and down (tilt). "Armature plate" is the correct name for the part that is rotating with the flywheel when you are pulling the rope. All of the ignition parts are mounted to it.

3: Well, OK, more than two causes: The armature plate may be broken. There is a brass bushing cast into the center of it. Sometimes the brass bushing will break loose and allow the armature plate to flop around loose.

My money is on #1

Re: Starting problem

So how do i fix it. It's not loose or broken. Probably someone replaced the coils and did something wrong. Do I need to pull the armature plate off and align. The reason I can start it is like I said, it doen'ts do it everytime. Just to be curious, does it hurt anything when I do get it started? What am I going to need? Should I just take it somewhere and have them do it? How long will it take? Thanks for your replies guys.

Re: Starting problem

if you are not mechanically inclined, take it to a service center, the fly wheel has to be removed, with harmonic balancer puller, the coils re aligned. or find another problem. yes running it like that can damage the flywheel, or the coils.

Re: Starting problem

If you look closely at this picture you can see the burn marks from the coils rubbing on the magnets (circled).

Re: Starting problem

Looking at that picture, I think I'm going to take it in and hopefully they can get it done fast. Looks like the '57 10hp is going to get the call for the week. One more question and thanks for all the answers, why if it sometimes it catches so bad when I pull, it's not catching bad when it's running, not like it shuts down or the armature plate completely turns so it goes off. I can idle way down and it runs great.

Don't know without going in there and find out for sure what's going on. I gave 3 guesses. The rest has to be a looksee.

Re: Starting problem

Man u guys are good. Thank u F_R and tashasdaddy.

I made a outboard mechanic out of my local guy who does my truck and van repairs. He's a young guy who runs a shop by himself and i try to patronize when I can. He had the puller and we popped off the flywheel. Before pulling off you could tell by torque nut someone had it off recently. You could see on the inside of the flywheel where one magnet was rubbing. The coils where just a hair off. We re-aligned them put it back together and took her down to the marina and now it doesn't catch at all. Coils and flywheel looked OK. I'm smiling just like this:D

Just nice to know something that wasn't right is correct now. Everything under the flywheel looked new. Everything was real clean. Thanks again so much for your help. Now everything u guys wrote makes a lot of sense. Not much room in there.
