Hello;
I am new to boating. I bought a seaswirl 3 weeks ago, It has a 96 volvo penta 5.0 Fi in it. I have a hard time starting the motor when it is hot and sits for a couple of minutes. When it is cold, or if it was just shut-off it will fire right up. When it sits for few minutes or even an hour,I have to crank for 40- seconds before it fires, and I can smell gas. If I put full throtle on it fires quicker but still hesitates. The previous owner said he had that problem but just lived with it. I put 3/4 of the tank of fresh gas, but it behaves the same. Any ideas on what the problem might be? I am pizzled since it only happens when it sits for a while.

Thanks in advance.

i hope you are not too "PIZZLED" pete,.
when you have shut it off warm, take off the flame arrester on the top of the motor, (air cleaner)
and look to see if the injectors are dripping.
they are supposed to hold fuel pressure in the system, if they drip a little, it will "flood" the motor slightly, that is why it starts better when you open the throttle, it gives it more air,
much like putting the accelerator to the floor to clear a flooded carb,. the injectors might need new gskets/o-rings,..

Thanks nick, you cleared up some of my pizzle. **** fat fingers. My spell checker is also broken, and is getting worse as I get old. Anyway, this sounds very probable and I will check the injectors this weekend.
Thanks.

I had some trouble finding flame arrester. I don't think it is a leaking injector since the engine has eight of them. Do you think it would be possible for most of them to leak? Any more ideas? I am starting to think it is somehow my fuel pump?

I have talked to a mechanics and they are backed up for at least 2 weeks. He is also saying that it is getting flooded. Anyone knows what the problem my be? Should I take all injectors out, and inspect them? How should they look like?

Any help is greatly appreciated.
