Im new to boating and have just bought my first boat a fletcher arrowflyte a couple of weeks ago. It has a mid 80's mercury thunderbolt 70hp engine. However it cut out due to running out of petrol and now will not start again, after refiling it.

When i turn the key in the ignition absolutly nothing happens. If i press down th electric choke i can here a click in the engine, so i take it the ignition is ok.

This is not the first time this has happened and it seems to be when the engine is hot. Could this be the solenoid sticking? could any one give me any advice. Thanks jimmysea

Re: Starting - Nothing happens when key turns

Have you checked your microswitch for neutral in the Control unit.
Possibly could prevent your starting.
To check it find the wires going to this switch and bridge them( this will by pass the neutral safety switch), make sure you have the control lever in neutral and turn the key, if it starts then that's your problem.
Another suggestion is to pull the wire from the mercury switch on the engine, if faulty this will prevent starting.
Hope this helps

Check all fuses at the engine.. They are inline fuses that are incased in black carriers for red wires...
