This may sound like a dumb question. But I just bought a new boat that has a 89 25 horse Suzuki outboard on it. The seller did not supply a manual for the motor. I have run a few outboards in my life but never a Suzuki and I cannot figure out how to get the electric start to engage. It looks like there is a red colored cap on the right side of the motor that fits over a rubber button that needs to turn somehow. Is this the starter? And if so how does this mechanism work? Also there is a dial guage located next to it with an s and and f on it. What is this for? Thanks for the help.

Re: Starting my 89 Suzuki

Hi Zesty. I have an 85hp Suzuki, some similarities exist ! The dial with S & F is the idle speed adjustment. S = Slow and F = Fast. All outboards that I have owned that are electric start have a control box/ignition key etc up by the steering wheel, but your msg sounds like your setup is all controlled at the engine. According to my workshop manual, the button on the right hand side is a "Push" button start switch. However, in order for the starting system to function, you must first have the engine in neutral, and make sure that the safely lanyard is in place. Hope this helps in some way - oh by the way the STOP button is located in the end of the tiller !

Cheers
Mike
