Re: starting motor

Aha! Do you think he wants to know if the starters from 3 cylinder and 4 cylinder Mercs, same HP, same year, are interchangable? Makes sense if Merc really made 3 and 4 cylinder 50s in 1979.

Franner! What is your need?? I am not a Mercspert (Mercury Expert), but there are several here who are. They are ready to help.

Red sky at night. . .
JB

Re: starting motor

Lists 4 different starters for Merc 50 HP depending on SN, 3 or 4 cyl & on whether jet drive....

So I would say NO... from pictures they might seem to be same size but have different mounting brackets/positions...

So best bet would be to get starter for appropriate model & serial number... as any certified Merc mechanic at your local shop. marina, etc. would instruct you to do!!!

------------------
"Keep It Between The Bouys" & "Good Luck"!!!

fone_man

Re: starting motor

Hi all.Sorry i did'nt explain too well last time so here goes.
My starting motor packed in so I sent away to mercury for a new one for my ,79 4cylmer 50 which I recived.I gave it to the mecanic
and he fitted it for me.After about 10 starts the motor went again and after checking all serial numbers on both engine and starting motor it turned out that the starting motor I got from mercury was for a 3cyl engine. The motor fitted perfectly. A new motor will cost about £450 in ireland. So I was trying to find out if the mecanic should have spotted the differance between the two types of motor when fitting?
thanks everyone for your help
Fran

Re: starting motor

Ahoy, Franner. That is very surprizing! Starter motors very rarely fail, and two in a row makes me suspicious that the real cause of your trouble lies elsewhere.

How did your wrench (mechanic, technician)verify that the motor had failed? Was it an electrical failure (open winding, for example) or mechanical failure (broken commutator, broken field pole, bearing siezure, etc.)

On more than one occasion I have removed, cleaned and reconnected the complete high-current circuits in an engine and reinstalled a "failed" starter motor that gave no further trouble. Please do this or have your wrench do it before buying another starter.

Good luck, let us know how it turns out. :)
