Starting issues

Anyone please help. My starter recently started turning slowly and then eventually quit. I took it off and had it completely rebuilt. The gentleman that rebuilt it bench tested it in front of me, so I know it works. I put the starter back on and all I get is a "woodpecker" sound. It never sounds like it is under any load. I can see the flywheel and all the teeth are fine. I replaced the positive cable with a new one, because I thought it was possibly not getting enough power through the old one. It is still doing the same thing. Not only was the starter rebuilt but a new solenoid was put on it as well.

I have a 1987 Mercruiser 5.7L 260. I have one main battery cable going to the starter with a red wire and an orange wire all going to the solenoid on the same post with the battery wire. the smaller post to the right of the main post on the solenoid has the yellow with red striped wire going to it.

Please...any suggestions. BK

Re: Starting issues

A bad battery or loose/dirty connections on either the Positve or negative cable can do the same thing. And don't forget, each cable has 2 ends.

If the battery and cables are ok, pull the spark plugs out and see if the engine will turn over easily by hand.

Re: Starting issues

Bad ground.
Corroded ground.
Bad solenoid.
No matter how you slice it. it still could have a bad starter too. bench tests with no load are no test at all...

Re: Starting issues

Thanks to all replies.

I have taken out the plugs and it will turn freely. I will definitely check the ground wire as well. I did conduct the bypass test on the solenoid and I get the same thing.

Thanks, BK
