Ive had the boat for 3 months been a nice machine, recently ive noticed when shutting down to go through the locks, its reluctant to restart after 15/20 minutes.
If i play with the throttle i can get it to catch and its away again, idles nice and plenty of power, just this starting issue.
I am diesel hgv truck mechanic, and carbs are a mystery to me if thats the fault.
It has new plugs gapped to 1.1mm, oil change a few hours ago, ive had the distributor cap off to check, some light corrosion on the terminals but thats it, the engine itself is spotless.

It's normal to have to use the throttle on a carbed engine, it's not EFI. below are the starting procedures from a Mercruiser manual, Volvo is basically the same procedure.

3. Push THROTTLE ONLY button and position throttle setting as follows:
a. COLD ENGINE - Move control/throttle lever to full throttle, then return to about 1/4
throttle. In extreme cold it may be necessary to pump lever more than once.
b. WARM ENGINE - Move control/throttle lever to 1/4 throttle position.
c. FLOODED ENGINE - Move control/throttle lever to full throttle. Be prepared to
decrease engine speed to 1000-1500 RPM as soon as engine starts.
IMPORTANT: Do not operate starter motor continuously for more than 30 seconds.
4. Turn ignition key to START. Release key when engine starts and allow switch to return
to ON position.

Don thank you, thats pretty much what i do already, i assumed its wrong, but havent worked on carbs since i last had motorbikes well over 20 years ago!
Went out in it again today and i was a bit more aggressive with the throttle during starting and whilst its still not perfect it started everytime with no drama, so i shall leave alone and see how it goes.
