Starting instructions?

I know this sounds dumb, but I'm picking up my first boat tomorrow. It has a 1980 Mercury 4cyl 80 hp.
The fellow demo'd the starting drill to me a few days ago but I think I forgot a few things. Are there instructions available somewhere?
From what I can remember I need to push the key in to set the choke, push the throttle lever button and move the control to nuetral? Then turn the key?
I may wait an extra day so he can go through it again but I'd like to bring it home tomorrow.
Are the dual muffs better than the single? I'd like to be able to run it briefly in the driveway to avoid making others wait at the launch while I fumble around.
And I need to run it to test the charging voltage.

Re: Starting instructions?

If you are unsure about how to start your motor, ask the seller to take you out on the boat before you take it home. Have him show you how to properly start it and operate it safely. I will give you a quick run through of how I start mine.

1. Connect fuel line and squeeze primer bulb until firm
2. Ensure that throttle/shift arm is in neutral
If using the electric choke:
2. Turn key to "ON"
3. Hold choke button down
4. Turn key to run until motor fires
5. Let off choke button so motor doesn't die

Most of these control boxes have Neutral Safety Interlock switches inside so you can only start it in neutral. But like I said, inexperienced boating can be dangerous to you and to others on the lake. If you don't know what you are doing, have an experienced boater take you out and get you acquainted with your boat and motor.

Re: Starting instructions?

I am having a friend come out with me for my first few launches. And I've passed the saftey exam and have driven boats years ago, but this is my first boat.
The button on the throttle arm must be for the nuetral switch. I am going to write down the instructions you posted and take them with me to the lake. Thanks.
