Starting fluid

When reading threads, I often come across the advice saying that one should not use starting fluid in a 2 stroke engine due to the lack of lubrication. I have a starting fluid that has lubrication in it and is recommended for marine engines. It does not specify 2 or 4 stroke but I assume it is OK to use in 2 strokes since it contains lubrication. The URL for the product is:

Valvoline.com > Products > Pyroil > Starting Fluid Pyroil > Pyroil? Starting Fluid

If the link doesn't work, you can paste it into your browser and read about it.

I would like to know what others think of this produce since it seems to be the solution to a common problem.

Thanks Iboaters

PS I did not know the best place to put this thread so Moderators, feel free to place it where it will do the most good.

Re: Starting fluid

Starting fluid is a infected band aid. If you have to use it you have a problem else where. It is really hard on engines. I have misted a "dab" near the air intake but not often. It's great for cleaning out an overboard. Bottom line. Find why the engine is not starting and fix it.

Re: Starting fluid

Sorry, but I myself wouldn't use it. I always use a bottle of premix fuel and then I know what's going into it.

Re: Starting fluid

I tend to agree. It's a bit of a dirty trick that is usually masking a bigger issue in the fuel system. It usually just means you need to clean/rebuild the carb, or some fresh spark plugs. That being said, I have a can on the boat "just in case", but I've never had to use it. Besides, just because it gets the motor running, doesn't mean it will keep it going :/

Re: Starting fluid

Starting fluid is a bad idea in any engine. I have seen the damage it does to 4 strokes and even diesel engines.
As stated above, find the real problem and fix it. Throw the starting fluid idea out the window.

Re: Starting fluid

Starter fluid came from the days of old diesels before glow plugs, and pre-heaters existed.
IMHO that's the only engines it is acceptable to use on (sparingly).

Ether has an octane level of 0. It can overwhelm a cylinder, and crack pistons.
A little spray of it blows off quick enough to seat a truck tire on a rim (yes I've done it, and don't recommend it to anybody).

As stated, it's a band-aid for engine problems.
