I was recently told that if I start the engine with the out drive tilted up I would be stretching the lower shift cable.
I just had to recently replace it.
When fishing in the shallows I am moving in and out with the out drive tilted up, starting and re-starting in the up position. I been told that is is wrong and that you should always start with the engine with the outdrive in the down position to avoid strectching the shifter cable.
Any comments?
Thanks

Ahem! Might help if you tell us what make, model and year of the outdrive in question. They were not all created equal.

If you are talking about partially tilted up, that should be OK. If it is anywhere near full up, or close to the "trailer" position, that can cause problems with most drives. As Boomyal requested, year make and model would help.

wont bother the shift cable.
on some models it may bother the bellows. I dont like to see any of them run at full tilt. not much past the trim limits.but as far as the shift cable is concerned it wont hurt it. myself I have never seen the cable stretch. its rather tough. made of many straands of hardened staainless. I see them wear out the inner jacket and get sloppy but never actually saw a stretched one.
