Starting Battery not getting charged

Hello All,
I just purchased a 19' bass boat with the Merc 150 XR6 outboard. The motor is a 1992. My question is, does it have an alternator? Is it supposed to charge the starting battery while it is running, or do I need to charge it every once in a while. Seems to me that it must have some sort of charging system because of all the accessories that battery also runs.

If there is one, it is not working. The battery is brand new and should be good (I guess I am assuming that). I just bought it a month ago. When I use a trickle charger, the boat starts great, but after a couple of weeks of use, the battery goes dead again. Last night I was on the lake fishing and it would not start. I had to move the wires over to one of the trolling motor batteries to get it going.

If it is bad, does anyone know what it takes to replace it? I'll get the battery checked just to make sure.

Thanks to the great board.

Aaron

Yes, it should charge the battery. Does the tach work (if you have one)? Tachs are connected electrically to the charging circuit and normally start jummping around or just quit. I would have your regulator/rectifier checked first to see if its ok. It converts AC voltage that comes from the stator (under the flywheel) to DC voltage to charge your battery. Make sure first your battery is good by having it load tested and tested with a hydrometer.

Thanks Trent. Yes, it has a tach and it seems to be working fine.

dont know the specifics of your motor, but someone else will. Usually, alternator wires burn up, or the rectifier is fried. It only takes a momentary reverse connection at battery and its blown.

Regulated Alternator output 40 amps at 5000 rpms.

Food for thought, you said "Last night" you went fishing. Acc. will also drain your batteries. Acc. can also load the charging system to the point the battery never really charges. You may want to look into your acc. loading.

From my exp with a 92' model motor....they dont really charge the battery enough to overtake the drain of starting, acc. equipt, etc...
