Starting a Honda 50

I have a 2000 Honda BF 50hp. My remote control does not have fast idel lever. Cold starts seem to take some time. I do full choke until it kicks over, then 1/2 choke until it starts. Once it starts I have to put it in gear for about 15 seconds to keep it running, then back to neutral and it works fine. What are some tricks of the trade to help start a Honda 50 with out a fast idel lever?

Re: Starting a Honda 50

So no tricks are starting a 4stroke?

One last question, contacted my local honda dealer and asked about my outboard "Makeing Oil". Eng has very low hrs on it, below 30 hrs. What concerns me is the honda tech said I need to run my outboard harder inorder to fully set the rings and since it is still in break in, rings have not set yet and gas can still trickel past pistons. Also was informed to run a "Decarber" like Ring Free to help the break in. Does this sound right? Sounds odd to me.

Past post say fuel in the oil can be caused by a faulty fuel pump. Is there a way to test the fuel pump?

Thanks,

What about the netural button :D

You should be able to raise the RPM if you use it

Not following the neutral button. All my remote has is a throttel lever for forward & reverse, trim tab on the handel. Key ignition has 2 indicator lights, kill safety switch, remote choke switch.

Hi Seahunt,

I have a Honda 45 1995, and the remote control is conventional style, with a fast idle lever which actuates the choke in the uppermost part of travel. so cannot help.

Neutral button means a button to move the throttle, but disengage the gear change. Is it possible that your control has one of these?

Now to making oil, take a look at this thread in FAQ:
http://forums.iboats.com/showthread.php?t=158085.

I am NOT an expert, but according to this thread, your mechanic might be right!

Re: Starting a Honda 50

My BF50 always started very well cold. I had the proper remote that came with it and it had a choke/fast idle lever that was extremely user friendly.
My BF50 never, "made" oil either.

My suggestion would be to consider purchasing the proper remote. It may well be worth the price if you consider the extra wear on the starter and battery. And the extra oil changes and potential cylinder wall wear.

DON"T run a "de-carber". If you're running rich enough to "make" oil, carbon is being washed away already by the raw fuel. That washdown in itself isn't helping starting or ring seating.

As an additional suggestion because I know the BF50 very well. Once you correct the choke/fast idle situation, the 20 hour valve adjustment is a very important one. During break-in will be the time the valve lash will change the greatest.
The BF50 is particularly sensitive in regards to tight valve clearances and cold weather starts.

However, for clarity, I believe your problem is more the lack of a fast idle/choke lever. Adjusting the valves will have little effect on that.

Re: Starting a Honda 50

I found the Neutral Button. I thought it was a gromet cover for the throttle switch. Now she starts great! With-in a few seconds in a turn of the key!

I also had a chance to run the engine hard this weekend. Oil did not gain any volume after a total of 10 hrs running this weekend, in fact It looks like it has droped a little. Some of the runs lasted over an hour at WOT.

I did use some seafoam in the gas, produced a little white smoke at the end of a hard run at idle and the tach was jumping a little. Shut down the motor and let it cool for a bit than started back up again and no smoke an tach remained constant. Could this have been caused by the seafoam?

Thanks for all of ya'lls help!
