Hey Guys
I just bought a 1968 Evinrude Fisherman off a friends dad and it is the cleanest outboard I have ever seen. The problem is that the motor hasn't been run in 2 years and has been sitting since the last time it ran. I was wondering if you guys had tips on getting it started. I figured change the lube out at the bottom and get fresh mixed gas and one other question does anyone know the exact amount of lube/oil for the bottom?. Should I mess with the spark plugs? Can you guys think of anything else? What about the mixture setting on the front of the motor where should that be set?

Oh yeah here is the serial number if anyone was interested in that

6802C- E01261

also the bolts on the block look as to have never been touched by a wrench surprisingly enough.

Thanks for any help

Kevin

Re: Starting a 6 hp Evinrude Fisherman

hello
if it sat 2 years and has otherwise never been wrenced then rebuild the carb, inspect the points replace the head gasket as well as the T-stat and gasket. along with the waterpump. if the original cast pump housing is not scuffed it can be reused. some of the 6's if used in salt areas had upper gearcase bearing housing leaks. all of the split cases had shift shaft seal problems. dont worry about how much oil it holds. fill it from the bottom until it runs out the top as per the service manual.now to the gear case drain/vent plugs. only remove the straight slotted ones. leave all phillips headed screws alone :) :) /.if the sealing side of the screw is smooth it uses a paper type gasket. if it has a ridge it uses a nylon washer. if it has a groove it uses a Oring. never know when someone changed someting. I have 2 of them out back now that are killer little motors
good luck and keep posting

Hello.
Before you do anything beyond changing the lower unit oil and changing the impeller, you might as well get her on the back of a boat or in a barrel with the lower unit halfway in the water and start it!!!. 2 years is not an eternity and the motor may well have been winterized. You are dealing with a good piece of machinery that does not easily go bad.
Good luck.

Hey rolmops
Thanks for the help does the oil in the lower unit go bad or need a stabilizer for sitting so long? Also is there a way to check and be sure that nothing is jammed in the water cooling system before starting it, cause that is a recurring reason friends in the past have lost used outboards. While having it out last weekend I did check with a light pull and it has pretty good compression from what I can tell from my experience with other small motors.

Thanks again for the help

Kevin

Hello again.
The lower unit oil will not go bad. The reason for changing is mostly to make sure no water has gotten in the lower unit and making sure there is enough oil in there.
As for checking the cooling system. Once you have the lower unit off to replace the impeller, take a garden hose, stick it on the water pipe going up to the engine and give it some pressure(If your engine has a thermostat you would have to remove it)and if the water comes out the other end,you are in business.
Read really well in your manual how to install the impeller.Turning the driveshaft clockwise while thightening the screws is very important.
good luck

Re: Starting a 6 hp Evinrude Fisherman

Hey Guys,
Thanks again for all the help. I took the motor out to the lake this afternoon and it ran really well. After taking it around and testing it for about 40 minutes I ran into a problem with it, it would wind up and sound as if it was out of gear or the prop wasn't spinning. Maybe a better way to explain it the motor noise made it sound as if was all the way tached out while the prop remained at the same speed. This may be normal but it was a sound I had not heard previous to the last 10 minutes on the lake. Oh and the pin and everthing is still in the prop and from the outside it looks visual ok.

Thanks Again

Kevin

Pikey, sounds like the rubber bushing in the prop has spun. nevjb

Pikey, depending on the transom height on the boat, you may have some cavitation going on here. This happens when air gets down to the prop via a vortex in the water. If the prop hub checks out OK, you may want to look into this.

John
