1969 28HP Evinrude twin. Starter motor wouldn't work (just bought the engine). Battery is fine (started my car). I disassembled the starter motor and cleaned it up, greased bearings and graphited the drive and cleaned up the electrical connections. Now the starter motor spins pretty well but doesn't seem to have enough power to turn the engine over unless I remove the spark plugs. Any suggestions? Is this a common problem? Anyone have a starter motor for this beast they would be willing to sell?

Re: Starter won't turn motor over

Probably not your starter, Howard. Put a voltmeter on the heavy wire terminal on the starter and turn it over. If you measure less than about 10.5 volts you have a bad cable or a bad connection in your high-current (starter) circuit. Fix that and save your money.

Good luck.
JB
