I've got a mercruiser 5.0, '94 ( the gm 305). I just replaced a burnt out starter with a new one, hooked it up the same way and now the new starter keeps cranking and won't stop everytime the battery switch is on. The key and safety cutouts are both in the off poition and I've replaced the slave solenoid but nothing is helping. It appears the new slave is working properly through the tests but??????? Any ideas??? Thanks

You have a short!

Try to disconnect the wire harness in the engine bay.

  1. If it still crank, you have a short ore wrong wiring on the engine.
  2. If it stop crank, I guess you have a bad ignition switch.

Also if you are not careful when you tighten the batt cable to the starter it can twist up and contact the other terminal.

Can also remove the yellow/red wire at the starter solenoid.maybe the new solenoid is bad, The yel/red wire is getting power or the battery cable is touching it.

Disconect the small wire on the starter and try, if it still turns it is a bad sylinoid. If it does not turn then it is a bad ignition switch or the small wire is shorted togetherto a hot wire. Like he said, be sure the cable didn`t turn and touch the other cable.
