Hello again after a long winter, I finally got back to trying to fix my engine for the new fishing season. After years of fixing things and many hours trying to fix this one problem where: with a new starter, starter solenoid, battery, new wiring and normal 110 compression on both cylinders and able to turn the flywheel by hand with no binding,"The starter would not turn the flywheel through compression."
I finally found the solution to the problem and learned a valuable lesson. "Don't go cheap when dealing with marine products"
The starter solenoid turned out to be an automotive solenoid, not a marine solenoid. The problem was: the solenoid back steel mounting became positive on actuation of the solenoid and was shorting to the painted (low resistance) engine housing in a momentary pulsating sequence. This caused a momentary pulsating short circuit resulting in a voltage drop to the starter motor (12VoltDC down to 9.4volts) which was sufficient to cause a pulsating starter motor. Surprisingly it turned OK with the plugs out.
With a new ARCO marine solenoid the engine runs fine.
Thank's to all of you for the expert suggestions.
I really enjoy the Bulletin Board.
