i got my ignition switch in and it works.
thanks to lonewolf and mbb.
next on the restoration, the starter spins and only pops up occaisonally. i took the starter to a starter/ alt. shop for autos and asked the guy if he could check it. he said that the starter was good.
i noticed that there are splices between the pos and neg cables from engine to battery. could that be the problem.

is it safe to spray the bendix with wd 40 or is there a better substance to use.

------------------

W40 is not a long term lube. Use what you want to get the crud off the post and gear then coat it with a marine or white grease.

Sounds like a Johnson. Had the same problem. Your battery must be fully charged to make it pop up consistantly. I replaced what I thought was a good battery. It solved my problem. good luck.

Check the battery cables. Take they in hand and bend them every 4-6" and listen feel for crunching. Only takes pin hole to let water in to the wire. Splicing battery cables is not an acceptable installation.

AMEN Big Four...

No matter how good the splice is, it's always a source for resistance...which equals heat...which equals fire!! Even though you may be surrounded by water, I believe the worse place fire can occur is on a boat. At the very least, funky battery cables & connections can cause your engine to not start...and at times that can be equally as dangerous. Insure all battery cables are in good order. If they're spliced, or compromised in any fashion... REPLACE THEM! Also, properly cleaning and lubing your starter bendix is mandatory preventative maintenance!

Good job on getting getting your ignition switch dialed in. I'm usually in favor of keeping systems and circuits original, but realize that's not always possible.

Walt

thanks for the advise. i cleaned the bendix and greased. the battery has one of those eye indicators, was showing green, but when i put on the charger it was only 60 pct charged. after charging the bendix pops up every time.

i will replace the battery cables.
i can order the origonal ignition switch that goes in the mercontrol. next up is the tilt and trim. i know i will need lots of help on that. i will post more on that when i get started on it. all of your help is greatly appreciated
