Starter Solenoid or Switch

I posted about this sometime back but still have not resolved it. Mainly because I have been able to work around it but it seems to have been getting worse. My issue is that sometimes when I try to start the motor up, I have to move the control lever back and forth to find just the right spot to start it. By that, I mean that I'm in neutral because I can feel it but I go to start and I can hear the solenoid click but the starter does not turn over. After fiddling with the position a bit it was finally start.
So the question is whether the problem is the reed switch in the control or the solenoid. Any thoughts on this one?

You can put the shifter into neutral, turn the key to on, and then take a screwdriver and jump the solenoid. See if it starts then. If it does the issue is not with the key switch, but the solenoid.

If you can hear the sel clicking but the motor dosnt turn then more than likely its the sel. If you have to play with the shifter to get it into the neutral position before it starts then its the neutral safety switch., If your turning the key and you hear nothing several times before it starts it may be the key switch.

Thanks. I think I'm going to just go ahead and replace the solenoid and see what happens. For $20 - why not.

All you have to do is jump it wit the key on, that'll show it.
