Re: Starter Smoking

Check the grounds near the starter. On my 85hp I added a larger ground i think it was 8 guage thhn. Connected it to the block where the main ground from the battery is.

What Jason said. Take both battery cables off (both ends) and carefully clean the ends and the terminals, then reinstall.

Re: Starter Smoking

After you make sure the connections are good then take the starter apart and clean. Then check the magnets and the brushes. If the magnets are still in place(they are glued in) reassemble with the brushes upsidedown.Clean the commutator(spot where the brushes ride).
I always had a backup.I ran 2 motors for 22 years and had a third starter on board. Those 85's were almost impossible to pull start.J

Re: Starter Smoking

These guys may be on to something with the cables, but it may also not
have anything to do with your starter. More a load on your engine.

My 120 did the same thing with the original and new starter. Turned
out the lower gear unit was fried and simply putting more load on the starter.
Even under normal conditions they pull huge current and its recommended
you allow them to cool after a few start attempts...

Re: Starter Smoking

thanks, i'll check the cables. i did take the starter apart this morning and i noticed a small piece of one of the mags had broken off. also one of the brushes was chipped off the corner on the bottom, the top side was clean and flat like the others. also, prior to removing the starter yesterday, when turning the key, the only sound was a clicking from the device prior inline to the starter -(starter solenoid?) - no motor movement.
