starter selenoid question

i am having a problem with my starter not engaging my flywheel on a 3.0lx mercruiser.... could cranking the starter too long too often cause the selenoid to fail in a way that it still functions (kicks out the bendix) but doesnt have the power to engage the flywheel. this is the only thing i am left with. the motor was being cranked alot when the stock starter failed and the aftermarket replacement starter was also cranked alot due to the faulty ignition switch getting stuck. can this situation allow the starter to pass a bench test but not work properly. should i just break down and buy an oem starter (replacement was aftermarket, db electric) thanks everyone

Re: starter selenoid question

A solenoid transmits power to the starter, it's a switch, and not a variable dimmer switch. The switch is either "on" or "off".
